Local SEO for franchise chains: every location at the top of Google Maps

Local visibility per location, managed centrally and optimised for each branch.

By Gijs Bodenstaff · Updated:

Local SEO for franchise chains makes sure every location is found when someone nearby searches, in Google Search and in Google Maps. We manage the Google Business Profiles of all your locations, keep name, address and phone number consistent everywhere and build local authority. This is our speciality: since 2010 we have worked on the local visibility of more than 800 businesses.

What is local SEO for a chain with multiple locations?

Local SEO means optimising your visibility for searches with local intent, such as "hairdresser near me" or "physiotherapy Utrecht". For a chain it is not about one profile, but about dozens or hundreds of Google Business Profiles that all follow the same brand rules and yet need to be locally unique.

The three factors Google itself names for local results are relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change distance. Relevance and prominence you can: with complete profiles, the right categories, reviews, photos, posts and strong location pages that rank.

Why chains often perform worse than independent businesses

An independent business owner manages one profile with care. In a chain, nobody really owns it. Profiles become incomplete, duplicate listings appear and management rights sit with former employees. The Local SEO Benchmark Franchise Ketens 2026 found that only 40% of 500 profiles examined were fully completed.

How are Dutch franchise chains doing in Google Maps?

Together with Stichting LODAK, we spent six months examining 500 Google Business Profiles of the 100 largest Dutch franchise chains, five profiles per chain. The results show how much there is to gain.

How do we divide the work on Google Business Profiles?

The franchisee knows the local situation best. We make sure their knowledge ends up in the profile, without them having to log in or being able to break anything.

How does local SEO connect with reviews, GEO and Ads?

Local SEO does not stand alone. Reviews are an important factor in local rankings, which is why we combine profile management with review management for franchise chains. AI assistants draw their information about local businesses partly from business profiles and reviews, so a strong profile is also the foundation for visibility in ChatGPT and AI Overviews. And where a location does not yet rank at the top organically, we fill the gap with local search ads.

Everything we know about this subject is in Franchise Local SEO & GEO Handboek 2027 (Dutch-language edition), with 69 chapters on the local visibility of chains.

Frequently asked questions about local visibility per location

How long does it take for local SEO to deliver results?
Technical improvements to profiles often show up in Maps within a few weeks. We measure structural growth in visibility over a quarter, because reviews and local authority take time.
Do franchisees have to hand over their Google Business Profile?
No, but head office should own the organisation account. The franchisee gets read access and supplies local input. That way the brand stays protected if a location changes owner.
What do you do with duplicate or suspended profiles?
We track them down in the baseline measurement. We have duplicate profiles merged or removed via Google, and we restore suspended profiles with a well-substantiated reinstatement request.
From how many locations is this worthwhile?
From around ten locations. At that point central management clearly saves time and adds consistency. We help smaller franchise brands with advice or a one-off setup.
Can I test with a few locations first?
Yes. After the free scan of three locations, we usually start with a paid pilot of ten to fifteen locations, and only then roll out.
Which factors determine whether a franchise location ranks high in Google Maps?
Google itself names three factors for local results: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change the distance to the searcher. You can improve relevance and prominence, with complete profiles, the right categories, reviews, photos, posts and strong location pages. In a chain this has to be right for every location separately, within the same brand rules.
Why do franchise chains often perform worse in Google Maps than independent businesses?
Because in a chain nobody truly owns the profiles. An independent business owner manages one profile with care, while in chains profiles become incomplete, duplicate listings appear and management rights sit with former staff. In the Local SEO Benchmark Franchise Chains 2026, only 40% of 500 Google Business Profiles examined were fully completed.
What does Local SEO cost per franchise location?
Local SEO costs €99, €250 or €400 per location per month, excluding VAT. Basic covers profile management and NAP monitoring. Growth, the most popular package, adds review management and posts. Full service adds local landing pages and AI visibility on top of that. You can start with a free scan of three locations to see where the gains are.
What is NAP consistency and why does it matter for a franchise chain?
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. NAP consistency means these details are identical for every location on the website, in the Google Business Profile and in other listings. In a chain with dozens of locations, these details quickly drift apart, for example after a move. We check the NAP at the start and every quarter after that.
How does a franchisee supply photos and news for their Google Business Profile?
The franchisee sends photos and local news via WhatsApp or a form, and we post and optimise them. They do not need to log in themselves, so they cannot change anything by accident. Head office remains the owner of the organisation account and approves the guidelines. That way the franchisee's local knowledge still ends up in the profile.
