Growing the franchise brand

Recruiting new franchisees with online marketing

Recruitment marketing for franchisors, from campaign to introductory meeting.

By Gijs Bodenstaff · Updated:

Recruiting franchisees with online marketing means reaching entrepreneurs who suit your franchise brand in a targeted way, and guiding them along a clear route to an introductory meeting. We set up the campaigns, landing pages and content, and make sure every lead is followed up quickly and properly. That way your franchise brand grows with the right people.

In brief: recruiting franchisees

  • You recruit new franchisees online with a funnel: awareness, orientation, consideration and decision.
  • At its heart is a recruitment page with honest information about the investment, support and earnings model.
  • Google Ads reaches active searchers; LinkedIn and social media reach entrepreneurs who are not yet searching.
  • Fast, personal follow-up within a day is what sets you apart from other franchise brands.
  • Measure qualified leads, meetings and signed agreements.
  • Pay for recruitment from the franchisor's growth budget, not from the marketing fund.

Why is recruiting franchisees difficult?

Becoming a franchisee is a big decision involving a substantial investment. The orientation phase takes months. Candidates compare franchise brands, talk to existing franchisees and search online for experiences. A single advert on a franchise portal is not enough; you need a route that builds trust.

According to the NFV, there are 936 franchise brands in the Netherlands, all competing for entrepreneurs. Standing out requires a clear proposition and visibility at the moment someone is searching.

What does the online recruitment route look like?

We work with a funnel in four phases. Each phase has its own content and its own goal.

What content convinces a prospective franchisee?

Honest information. What does it cost, what can you realistically earn, what does a working week look like, what support do you get? Stories from existing franchisees carry the most weight. We create that content together with you and your franchisees, and deploy it through local content for franchisees and social advertising for chains.

How do you make sure no candidate is left waiting?

A lead from a prospective franchisee is worth a lot and quickly disappears to another franchise brand. That is why we set up a fixed follow-up route: an automatic confirmation with practical information, personal contact within one working day and then an email series with stories from existing franchisees. In the report you can see each month how many candidates are in each phase, so you know where the route stalls.

How do you measure recruitment success?

On quality, not quantity. We measure leads, qualified leads, meetings and ultimately signed agreements, with the cost per step. This goes into the same monthly report as the rest of the marketing. For the paid part we use paid search campaigns per location and social advertising; the budget comes from the franchisor's growth budget, not from the franchisees' marketing fund.

Which online channels work best for recruitment?

Each channel has its own role in the funnel. The combination determines the result; one channel is rarely enough.

What has our own experience taught us about recruitment?

Founder Gijs Bodenstaff himself built up a franchise brand in ten countries and held countless conversations with candidates along the way. The lesson he took from it: the best franchisees do not choose the franchise brand with the nicest advert, but the one that is most honest about what the work demands and what it delivers. That is why we start every recruitment route with the recruitment page and the stories of existing franchisees, and only then move on to the adverts. And we do not measure the number of enquiries, but the number of meetings with candidates who are a good fit.

Frequently asked questions about recruitment marketing for franchisors

Which budget pays for recruiting franchisees?
Preferably the franchisor's own budget, not the marketing fund to which franchisees contribute. That fund is intended for customer-facing marketing.
How quickly should a lead be followed up?
As soon as possible, ideally the same day. A candidate who has to wait a long time will look elsewhere at another franchise brand.
Franchisee recruitment: do franchise portals still work?
Yes, as a supplement. We combine them with your own channels, so you are not dependent on a single portal and build the relationship with the candidate yourself.
Can you also build the recruitment page on our site?
Yes. A good recruitment page with honest information, stories and a clear point of contact is the core of the route.
How long does it take before recruitment delivers results?
Expect candidates to take several months to make up their minds. The first leads often come in within weeks; signed agreements follow later.
Franchisee recruitment: how do you filter out unsuitable candidates?
By being honest up front about the investment, requirements and work involved, and with a few qualifying questions in the form.
How do you recruit new franchisees through online marketing?
With a recruitment funnel: reaching candidates through Google Ads, LinkedIn and social media, informing them on an honest recruitment page, following up within a day and inviting them to an information evening or a meeting.
What is the role of the recruitment page?
All channels send candidates to the recruitment page. There they find honest information about the investment, support and earnings model, franchisee stories and an easy first step, such as a brochure or an information evening.
How many candidates do you need for one new franchisee?
That varies greatly by franchise brand and sector. Measure it yourself for each step of the funnel, so you know how many leads and meetings are needed for one signed agreement.
Which content is most convincing for prospective franchisees?
Stories from existing franchisees carry the most weight, because they are credible and relatable. An honest overview of the investment and conditions, a day in the life of a franchisee and frequently asked questions about the franchise also help. The investment overview also filters out unsuitable candidates in advance, so you talk to the right entrepreneurs more often.
